The ducks got a vacation in the back yard today!
We got the ducks when they were a day old. Some of the nice people I work with found them without a mother and pitched in for food while I built them a duck house for the winter. I've heard contrasting viewpoints as to whether or not they will fly south for the winter - better safe than sorry!
We put in a small pool and, as I said, built them a duck house for the winter. But today we thought they would like a field trip to the water falls - and boy did they!!
They went up and down the stream finding all sorts of yummy tidbits...
...then it was back home to their pond.
Happy Labor Day!
How fun! Wondering where you've been. Glad to see you're back. I have ducks that nest in my front flower bed every spring, but then they go away. They've never ventured to the backyard pond, though. They usually go to my neighbors' pool, much to their chagrin. The plantings around your pond look very happy. I'm noticing especially the Rudbeckia. Mine did not do so well in our heat and drought this summer.
ReplyDeleteThat is sooooo cool. You are a great guy taking in the little ones that are now full duck size, and building them a home. I do hope they fly south though, but if they do, I bet they come back as spring rolls around. Ducks up here have stayed the winter. They grow so accustomed to people feeding them, they become year round residents, but it is not actually good for the ducks.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have raised ducks! They are adorable and look so at home walking around your garden. I bet they had a great time at the little falls! Keep us posted whether or not they stick around for the winter.
ReplyDeleteHi Matt I love ducks BUT will they trash your garden with those ever so webbed feet, nibbling bills and acid duck poo? Let me know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteThanks all for the nice comments! Catherine - They are definitely messy - I have an area about 30' x 15' with a small pond and a duck house where I keep them when I am not with them in my garden. Yes, they would make a huge mess in my garden and make nice little holes all over the place. Also, since I posted this three of them have flown south for the winter and I'm fairly sure that the others will follow. We'll see if they come back in the spring!!
ReplyDeleteThose are so cute and must be so much fun!!
