Fall can be very picturesque with it's transformation from the humble green to rich, lively yellows, brazen oranges and raucous reds. But, often these colors are missing from our own yards leaving our landscape feeling a little blasé and mundane.
I know you've been nose-to-the-grindstone since spring, but don't give up the ship just yet! Planting fall flowers can be the difference between a vibrant, exciting landscape and a big yawn. (yawn not lawn)
Plants that like the cool weather are the best candidates: Pansies, Mums (Chrysanthemums), Ornamental Kale, Johnny Jumpups... There are so many to choose from! Just try to remember those cold snowy days last winter when you couldn't play in the garden even if you wanted to and go out and enjoy one last round of planting that you will be able to enjoy for a few more weeks (to months) before the snow starts to fly.
Don't be a Pansy - Get your hands dirty!
Being called a pansy has come to mean a wimp or weakling but pansies are one of the hardiest plants. They enjoy the cool weather in the fall and will survive throughout the winter to become some of the first bright colors in the spring. In a mild winter they can even been seen after light snowfalls. So I say if you're called a pansy - STAND PROUD AND HAPPY! You're one of the tough ones!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you brought this up. I never have thought about pansies ( they remind me of spring). I am going to plant some this week! Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteI dont like Pansies, opting for the more delicate Violas instead. I have just planted up some winter pots and stillhave a lot of perennials to plant out so I have lots to do
ReplyDeleteThis is when I love my asters. They bring a lot of color to the fall... and I don't have to plant them in the fall. LOL! (I love pansies, too, though! :))
