Charming Nurseries Are Not Extinct

A visit to a garden center should be more than just a place to purchase a plant. It should be an experience, an adventure. Where you can smell the flowers, and take in the colors and textures of nature. It should be a place where you can hear the sounds of water running over a stone waterfall; where birds can be heard singing their songs of merriment. It should be a place of peace and tranquility.

A balance of not-too-big and not-too-small – the garden centers I enjoy seem to be the ones that were once old farmsteads or mills of some sort that have been repurposed as a nursery. Often they are still owned by the descendants of the original owners which give them an air of antiquity and charm.

I’m looking for a staff that is friendly and helpful; one that is knowledgeable about the plants and products that they sell. They may not have all the answers at their fingertips, but they are willing to find the correct answers to your questions – because they care.

It is a pleasure to buy from a garden center that takes good care of their plants. It’s almost like dealing with an orphanage with thousands of little orphans who are all looking for a loving home. A good nurseryman wants their plants to have a long full life in your garden.

A visit to this kind of nursery is a sensual sensation. Sights, Sounds, Smells… None of the senses is left out. And, a quirky bit of eccentricity is always welcome. An eclectic feel to the quality products brings just a touch of whimsy to the garden. Having a chat while choosing your plants is still the norm in the home town nursery.

It’s a question of what you are looking for – really.

For me I’m willing to pay a little more to a local nurseryman who offers the old-corner-store kind of charm that has been lost with the advent of the Bog Box stores.

I come across these types of garden centers at times, and when I do I want to share them with everyone I know. Recently I visited a nursery called The Greenhouse Nursery and Garden Center in Logan, Utah. If you agree with me on what you like - then this is one you don’t want to miss. Friendly, knowledgeable staff; great quality plants; and a great atmosphere! A must see! They are located at 295 West 300 South. Stop by soon. In the meantime they have a website http://www.logangreenhouse.com/ – check it out.

Tell them Matt sent you. Enjoy! And let me know what you thought.

Go get dirty!!

  2. I would way rather support businesses like these than the big box stores, even if I have to spend a few dollars extra.
