A PassAlong Plant

I got a start of this plant from my father's yard before he passed away.  It is a very pretty flower, but holy smoke is it invasive - it drops seed everywhere and grows like a weed.  I don't know what it is.  If anyone out there knows the name I would be very interested to find out - please leave a comment below.
Beautiful.

  1. I think this might be a Corn flower. They are fun and easy to grow. I'm glad you were able to get something from your Dads garden, what a great way to keep memories alive.

  2. If it's the same one I got from Dad's yard, he told me it was Straw Flowers. They dry well and can be used in dry flower arrangements because they keep their bright sunny look even when dried. They can be invasive if you let the seed pods drop but if you dead-head them and collect a few seed pods you can put them wherever you want. Dad just pulled them off the flowers and scattered them for next year's flowers.

  3. I think it's a calendula and there are plenty of pics on google images as it comes in many varieties of leaf shapes. What the seeds look like are half moons. They don't make very good cut flowers as you don't want to cut the stem with so many ready to bloom buds which just faint away in a vase but will bloom like daylilies for the whole summer. So they hold you ransom to their own blooming time. They smell quite strong, almost like marigolds, maybe orangey? To me they deserve a place in the garden that's sunny and where you have given up on doing any control at all.

  4. Thanks Anna - I think you are right. I do love them in the yard - they just spread so easy, you want to make sure it's somewhere you don't mind them going crazy!
